When you’re first getting into online poker, you may well find yourself assaulted by terminology that seems loopy and out of this world.  This article is going to review some of the “greatest hits” of poker chatter and help you get a better grasp on when and how to use phrases that make no sense out of context.  There are more comprehensive guides to poker terminology online, but this will give you a head start that can keep your opponents guessing abotu your skill level.

The Naughty
When a player has “the nuts,” they’re not referring to the body part that baseball players adjust while standing on second base.  “The nuts” is used to describe the best possible hand that can be made with the cards on the board.  For instance, if you’re holding two aces and the board shows AA369, you’re holding quad aces, the best possible hand that can be made with what’s available.  “Big Slick” refers to pocket Ace-King, not, you know.

The Weird
A player with “tapioca” has run out of chips/cash to play the game.  “Rabbit Hunting” is when players look through mucked cards to see what possible hands could have happened.  Many players learn a lot about their opponents’ playing styles through rabbit hunting, and it’s a good idea to avoid it unless you’re playing with friends.  A “fish” is a poor player, compared to the “sharks” that devour them.  “Heinz” refers to having 57 in the hole and “Siegfried And Roy” refers to pocket queens.  That one might take you a minute.

The Straightforward
A lot of poker terminology is, despite what you see above, pretty straightforward and refers to the actions in the game.  For instance, if you “check,” you basically place a bet of zero dollars.  If you “check raise,” you’ve chosen to check at first, then raise should anyone else bet. This is done as a way to lure other players into betting when you think they may fold if you bet outright.

Our favorite term, however, is “American Airlines,” to describe pocket Aces.  It’s one of those things that can make you feel like you’re flying!

Your opponent then set the soldiers the same way like you did, opposite to yours.

Looks strange? Well, in the beginning it is always like that, but soon you’ll see that it is the easiest game on earth, even more than Blackjack or online poker that they have complicated rules and strategies.
